Freeland is a very small coastal town (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of Washington. With a population of 2,252 people and two associated neighborhoods, Freeland is the 208th largest community in Washington. Housing costs in Freeland are among some of the highest in the nation, although real estate prices here don't compare to real estate prices in the most expensive communities in Washington.Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Freeland is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Freeland is a town of professionals, managers, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Freeland who work in management occupations (17.78%), healthcare (11.11%), and business and financial occupations (8.75%). Of important note, Freeland is also a town of artists. Freeland has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Freeland’s character. A relatively large number of people in Freeland telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 24.17% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes. It is a fairly quiet town because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Freeland has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Freeland has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Freeland than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Freeland may be for you. One of the nice things about Freeland is that it is nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities. One downside of living in Freeland is that it can take a long time to commute to work. In Freeland, the average commute to work is 35.38 minutes, which is quite a bit higher than the national average. On the other hand, local public transit is widely used in the town, so leaving the car at home and taking transit is often a viable alternative. Despite being a small town, Freeland has a lot of people using a ferryboat to get to and from work every day. Most of these people on a ferryboat are using it to get to good jobs in other cities. The education level of Freeland citizens is very high relative to the national average among all cities (21.84%): 38.62% of adults in Freeland have a bachelor's degree or even advanced degree.
