Smyrna is a larger medium-sized town located in the state of Tennessee. With a population of 56,516 people and 14 associated neighborhoods, Smyrna is the 13th largest community in Tennessee. Smyrna has seen a significant amount of newer housing growth in recent years. Quite often, new home construction is the result of new residents moving in who are middle class or wealthier, attracted by jobs, a healthy local economy, or other amenities as they leave nearby or far away areas for greener pastures. This seems to be the case in Smyrna, where the median household income is $76,115.00.Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Smyrna is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Smyrna is a town of sales and office workers, professionals, and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Smyrna who work in office and administrative support (12.22%), sales jobs (9.57%), and management occupations (7.82%). Also of interest is that Smyrna has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US. One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their home: 9.00% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes. In terms of college education, Smyrna is somewhat better educated than the 21.84% who have a 4-year degree or higher in the typical US community: 27.64% of adults 25 and older in the town have at least a bachelor's degree. The per capita income in Smyrna in 2022 was $33,549, which is upper middle income relative to Tennessee, and middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $134,196 for a family of four. However, Smyrna contains both very wealthy and poor people as well. Smyrna is an extremely ethnically-diverse town.
